It is a common misconception that you have to be a good writer to make money from writing online. Don't take that to mean that you can write any old rot and make money on it. The quality of your writing has to be high it just means that the writing style can be more informal than the academic writing that you may have gotten used to in school/college.

Take this article for instance it discusses the topic in a very informal style. Had I written a piece like this back in school I would have probably gotten a fairly low mark due to the writing style. The thing is this kind of writing style works well online because it is easy to follow and flows really well. The internet is full of articles that are written in a similar style.

Of course writing in this style is not for everyone. Some people prefer to write in a more academic style and their writing does very well online. It is just a case of personal taste. The reason I write the way I do is because I like my readers to feel like I am talking to them not lecturing them. Quite a few of the topics that I choose to write about are quite dry and not exceptionally entertaining, so I try to inject a bit of my personality into my writing to make the topics I write about more bearable.

There is a psychological reason for my writing in an informal way. In this day and age people have such very busy lives and they have the sum of all human knowledge at their fingertips. The internet is full of knowledge about near enough any topics you could think of. This has bred a generation of people who want information at breakneck speed and they want said information given to them in an easy to understand way. They also want to get the information as quickly as possible.

Here is an experiment to try. Next time you are surfing the internet looking for information about something try timing how long you spend on each page. Generally speaking people will spend less than 5 minutes on each page that they click on. Also many people when surfing the net will only scan read the pages that they click on. With these facts in mind you can see why most article writers will keep their articles short and to the point when writing online.

So basically when writing for the internet in an attempt to make money you do not have to be a Pulitzer prize winner but you do have to make sure that your writing makes sense. Even if your vocabulary is really poor that would not excuse you from having spelling errors, spelling errors are a big no, no for online content writers.
